Recent legislation authorizes fire districts to amend their current budget to provide for receipt of unexpected revenues. So, if you receive a FEMA grant in 2012 that was not in your budget, you can now amend the budget to allow you to spend it in the current year. You also add to the budget the same amount as an appropriation to spend the funds as provided for in the grant. If there is a match requirement you need to do a budget transfer or an emergency appropriation. You must submit prescribed documents to DCA in a timely manner. For more details go to Local Finance Board Notice No. 2012-11. You can also obtain the forms at www.NJFireDistricts.org.
